The Ukraine-Russia War has become a global humanitarian crisis. The UNHCR (United Nations Council for Refugees) has stated that 7.5 million people are potentially displaced due to this war. Currently, 1 million Ukrainians have fled the country, with millions more stuck in trains, at the border, waiting for their turn to flee the war-ridden country.
Families have been separated, with many women and children left alone. 80% are elderly. With the war destroying much of critical civilian infrastructure and obstructing transportation links, it is difficult to send these people aid. However, as of March 3rd, Russia and Ukraine have come to the agreement of "evacuation corridors" to help the Ukrainian refugees. This means donations and supplies can be made more accessible to the refugees that need them. Furthermore, for the locations where these corridors will be put into place, there will be a halt in fighting. Aid such as cash transfers, health and hygiene supplies, food and water, psychological help, and many more can help immensely these refugees.
The World Health Organisation has announced that they fear that this humanitarian crisis will escalate further, therefore the time to act is now. Donating to various charities, from international organisations like Save the Children, UNICEF, UNHCR and local organisations like the Singapore Red Cross Society who is working closely with the Ukrainian Red Cross Society is the best thing we can do as global citizens, living far away from the area of conflict.
2,000 Ukrainians have already been wounded and 352 have already died from this war. And these numbers seem to not slow down. Russian forces have captured some towns and cities already, attacking and amassing casualties. Currently, Russia is facing war crime investigations as humanitarian aid pours in for Ukraine around the world.
forthebettersg hopes to raise funds to help the numerous refugees by working with the Singapore Red Cross Society.
